Matthew Rivera
Post-doc

Matt grew up Memphis, Tennessee. He began his academic career at Mississippi State
University where he received degrees in both Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. As an
undergrad, he was involved in research on developing lignin-based adhesives and resins. After
graduation, he began his Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Georgia Tech under the advisement of
Prof. Ryan Lively. At Georgia Tech, he studied the transport fundamentals of molecularly-mixed
composite membranes, focusing on purifications in organic environments. Matt was awarded the
MIT Postdoctoral Fellowship for Engineering Excellence following his Ph.D. At MIT, he is co-
advised by Profs. Smith and Kulik and is working on data-driven materials discovery for
challenging chemical separations problems. In his free time, Matt enjoys baseball, baking, and
travel.
